And while I wish we knew more about Voldemort’s life, I don’t wanna know anything about her. I don’t care.

I actually think JK Rowling wanted us to pity Voldemort, though not excuse him of his actions, and HATE Umbridge. I think I even remember her saying one time that we should hate characters such as Vernon and Marge far more than we should a character such as Voldemort.
After all, Umbridge and Vernon are both individuals that lead successful, upstanding lives and had no real horrors in their upbringing (or life) like Voldemort did. Even Voldemort’s concept was something done with only a one-sided love attached to it.
So, we have more of an understanding for why Voldemort ended up being so messed up as he was and he becomes something that can be pitied and even seen as pathetic and cowardly, in comparison to Umbridge and Vernon who seem to be prejudice and bigoted and sadistic for no particular reason other than ignorance, which is scary, because there are so many people like that in the world.
